Work these out before ordering
Net peptide content, not label weight
A vial’s milligram figure is gross weight. Counter-ions and residual water are part of that mass and not part of the peptide, so calculating molarity from the label overestimates concentration — and the error scales with the size of your order. Blends are a total, not a per-component figure
An 80mg blend is not 80mg of each constituent. If your design depends on a specific component concentration, you need the per-component breakdown — see the KLOW blend breakdown.
Storage capacity
Bulk only helps if you can store it properly. Lyophilised material keeps well refrigerated at 2–8 °C; reconstituted solutions do not, and a large order does not change that. Plan aliquoting before the material arrives, not after — see aliquoting reconstituted peptides and how peptides degrade.
Batch consistency
Ordering a study’s full requirement at once means working from consistent material throughout, which removes a variable that is otherwise very hard to control retrospectively. Where that matters, say so when requesting a quote.
Working out how much you actually need
The most common reason a bulk order turns out to be the wrong size is that the calculation started from the label figure rather than from the experiment.
Work in the other direction. Begin with the working concentration and the volume per replicate, multiply by replicates and conditions, and add the dead volume that never reaches an assay: what stays in a pipette tip, what is lost to tube walls at low concentrations, and the aliquot that has to be sacrificed to a pilot run before the real one starts. Then convert to peptide mass, and only at that point convert to vials using the net peptide content from the certificate rather than the milligram figure on the label. The two numbers are not the same, and as noted above the gap scales with the order.
Add a margin for one repeat of the most failure-prone step. Studies that run out mid-series and have to reorder are the ones that end up comparing across batches, which is precisely the variable a bulk order was meant to remove.
Batch consistency across a long study
A certificate of analysis describes one batch, not a product line. Purity, the impurity profile and net peptide content are batch-specific figures, and two vials of the same compound from different batches are two slightly different materials.
For work spanning months that matters more than it first appears, because a batch change midway through introduces a step that no amount of statistical treatment afterwards can remove. If a study depends on consistency, record the batch number from the certificate when the first order arrives, and quote it when reordering so we can tell you whether that batch is still available. Where it is not, knowing that before the material ships is far better than inferring it later from a discontinuity in the data.
How to request a quote
A quotation can be issued quickly when the request contains what it needs. Five things:
- the compound, named exactly as it appears in the catalogue
- the quantity, expressed as total mass or as a number of vials at a stated size
- the delivery address, or at minimum the province, since tax is calculated on the destination
- the date the material is needed by, if there is one
- whether the quotation has to be in a particular format, or reference a purchase order or vendor number
If batch consistency matters, or if you will need to reorder against the same batch later, say so in the same message rather than afterwards. It changes what we check before quoting.
Where bulk stops being an advantage
It is worth being direct about this, because the answer is not always to order more.
Sealed lyophilised material held correctly is stable over long periods, so the storage argument for a large order is sound in principle. It stops being sound where the freezer is shared, where power interruptions are a known local risk, or where nobody can guarantee the vials will stay sealed and at temperature for the whole period. A large order sitting in an unreliable freezer is worse than two smaller ones, not better.
It also stops being sound where the study design is still moving. Ordering a full requirement against a protocol that has not settled tends to produce material for a concentration range that was later abandoned. In that situation a smaller first order, with the batch number recorded so the rest can be matched to it, gets you both the flexibility and the consistency.
Institutional purchasing
