Lyophilised material ships as stable powder and does not require cold chain over domestic transit windows. On receipt, transfer vials to a refrigerator at 2–8 °C without opening and allow them to reach room temperature before breaking the seal — see storage and stability.

Tax on orders delivered in Vancouver

An order delivered in Vancouver attracts 5% GST and nothing else. British Columbia is not a harmonised province and no provincial sales tax is added at checkout, so a BC delivery carries a materially lower rate than the same order shipped to Ontario or the Maritimes.

It is calculated on the delivery address and appears as a single line rather than as two, which makes an invoice straightforward to reconcile against a purchase order. A GST-registered laboratory or institution recovers it through the usual input tax credit.

There is no duty and no brokerage either, because a domestic parcel does not clear customs. That is the part a US or overseas listing tends to leave out of a price comparison: brokerage is charged by the carrier on delivery and is frequently the largest unbudgeted line on an imported order. Transit into the Lower Mainland

Vancouver is at the far end of every domestic route that starts in central Canada, so transit is typically a day or two longer than into Toronto or Montreal. Lyophilised material is shipped dry because it handles exactly this: a longer domestic window is still a tracked parcel on a predictable route, which is a different proposition from an unpredictable customs hold.

The local characteristic is density and vertical housing. A great deal of the Lower Mainland delivers to parcel rooms and concierge desks, which is secure and adds a holding period the tracking does not show.

The humidity question, which is the opposite of the prairie one

Vancouver’s winters are mild and wet rather than cold and dry, and for lyophilised peptides that inverts the usual seasonal concern. Elsewhere in Canada the winter risk is freeze–thaw; here it is sustained atmospheric moisture at temperatures well above freezing.

These materials are hygroscopic. A vial opened in a room at 80% relative humidity takes up water measurably faster than the same vial opened in Calgary in February, and water in the cake accelerates hydrolysis and the deamidation of asparagine and glutamine residues. The practical measures are unglamorous and effective: keep vials closed until they have reached room temperature, weigh quickly, and reseal. Ordering from a Vancouver institution

A large share of Lower Mainland orders go to a named laboratory rather than to a person: UBC’s Point Grey and Vancouver General campuses, Simon Fraser at Burnaby, the BC Cancer Research Centre and the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, and the research institutes attached to Providence Health Care and Vancouver Coastal Health. Those addresses behave differently from a residential one, and the difference is worth planning around rather than discovering.

Central receiving is the usual arrangement. The carrier marks a parcel delivered when it reaches the dock, and the internal run to a specific floor and bench happens on the institution’s own schedule — usually the same day, not always. Where a purchase order and a formal quotation are needed before an order can be raised, ask for both before checkout rather than after; we can issue them against a specified compound, quantity and delivery address. Put a department, room number and contact name in the address as well as the building. A parcel addressed only to a building is the single most common cause of an internal delay.

What actually moves the delivery date

Three things account for nearly all of the variation, and none of them is the compound.

The first is the dispatch cutoff. An order placed after the day’s cutoff joins the next dispatch, and one placed late on a Friday joins Monday’s. That single fact explains more slow deliveries than any transit event.

The second is the mountain route. Ground freight into the Lower Mainland from central Canada crosses the passes, and a winter closure or a chain-up advisory on the Coquihalla moves a truck’s arrival by a day. It is seasonal, it is visible in the forecast, and it affects ground service rather than air.

The third is the last hundred metres. Concierge desks, parcel rooms and mailrooms hold a parcel securely until someone collects it, and that holding period does not appear in the tracking at all. If a delivery shows as complete and the vial is not on the bench, the parcel room is the first place to look.

Summer, which inverts the local problem

Vancouver’s reputation for mild weather is a coastal reputation. The city itself rarely troubles a lyophilised powder in July, but the Fraser Valley and the Interior are a different climate: Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Kamloops and the Okanagan reach the mid-thirties, and the inside of a parked delivery vehicle is considerably hotter than the air around it.

Lyophilised material is shipped dry precisely because it tolerates that better than a solution would, and a domestic transit window at ambient temperature is within what the format is designed for. The avoidable exposure comes at the end rather than in transit — a parcel left in afternoon sun on a loading dock or a doorstep for several hours after it has been delivered. Where a summer delivery goes to an address that is not continuously staffed, a hold-for-pickup arrangement removes that window entirely.

British Columbia commercial notes

Orders placed with ExoLabz are governed by the laws of British Columbia, so for a Vancouver buyer the governing law and the delivery address sit in the same jurisdiction.
