On this page
MOTS-c is one of two mitochondria-related peptides we stock, and the two are often ordered together despite having nothing in common structurally. This page is about MOTS-c on its own: what the sequence is, why its certificate deserves a careful read, how it compares with SS-31, and how to order it within Canada.
What MOTS-c is
MOTS-c stands for mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c. It is a 16-residue peptide, Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg, encoded within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene rather than in the nuclear genome. Calculated monoisotopic mass is close to 2,174 Da. The synthetic peptide supplied for research is the same sequence made by solid-phase synthesis; it is not extracted from mitochondria.
Two methionines, a tryptophan and two tyrosines in sixteen residues make this a peptide with real analytical character: strong absorbance at 280 nm, and two sites for oxidation. Both points matter on the certificate.
MOTS-c and SS-31 are not related
SS-31, also called elamipretide, is a four-residue synthetic peptide, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, with a mass near 640 Da. It is not mitochondrially encoded and shares no sequence with MOTS-c. The two are grouped together in catalogues because both are studied in mitochondrial contexts, not because they are alike. We stock SS-31 10 mg separately, and our article on MOTS-c and SS-31 in mitochondrial research sets out where each one sits in the literature.
Reading a MOTS-c certificate
The oxidation question comes first. Each methionine that oxidises to the sulfoxide adds 16 Da, so a certificate should show a main peak at about 2,174 Da and, if present, minor peaks at about 2,190 and 2,206 Da eluting slightly earlier. A fresh, well-handled batch shows little of either. A report with a significant +16 shoulder is describing material that has already started to age. Our note on methionine oxidation, written for Semax, applies here unchanged.
Because MOTS-c absorbs strongly at 280 nm, a certificate can and should report purity at both 220 nm and 280 nm. The two figures will not be identical, since impurities without aromatic residues are invisible at 280 nm, and the lower of the two is the conservative one. Our specification is 99%+ by HPLC area, and identity should be confirmed by mass within a few daltons of the calculated value.
Storage and handling
Lyophilised MOTS-c is stable at minus 20 °C in a sealed vial. In solution it is one of the less robust peptides we stock: methionine oxidises in the presence of dissolved oxygen, tryptophan is light-sensitive, and the peptide is hydrophobic enough to adsorb to plastics at low concentration. Reconstitute in degassed water or buffer, aliquot immediately, keep aliquots frozen and protected from light, and use low-bind tubes for dilute working solutions. The article on light, oxygen and temperature in peptide degradation covers the mechanisms.
Sizes we supply
- MOTS-c 10 mg: the smaller vial.
- MOTS-c 20 mg: lower cost per milligram.
Both are supplied as lyophilised powder at 99%+ purity. Published certificates are on the certificates page; vials are matched to their report by cap and crimp colour.
Buying MOTS-c in Canada
Orders ship from stock inside Canada. Nothing crosses a border, so there is no customs declaration, no duty and no brokerage fee. Dispatch is usually within one business day, Canada Post, Purolator, FedEx and UPS services are offered at checkout with tracking, and tracked shipping is free on orders over $200. GST or HST is charged at the rate for the delivery province.
Volume pricing counts every vial in the cart, whatever the compound, so MOTS-c ordered with SS-31 and NAD+ for a mitochondrial panel reaches the break faster. The per-milligram price list shows the 10 mg and 20 mg vials side by side.
Research use only
MOTS-c from ExoLabz is a laboratory reference material for in vitro and analytical research. It is not a drug and not for human or veterinary use. We do not provide dosing or administration information. The purity guarantee refunds the product and the cost of the test if an independent laboratory finds a vial below its stated purity.
Built for Canadian labs that check the data
Packed and handed to the carrier usually within one business day, then tracked across Canada, typically 1 to 4 business days outside the territories.
Independent laboratories run the HPLC and purity work. Certificates live on the certificates page and on selected product pages, and cap and crimp colour ties a vial to its document.
Test a vial yourself. If an independent laboratory reports a purity failure, the product is refunded and the cost of that test comes back with it.
Free over $200 CAD, with no clearance, duty or brokerage anywhere in the country, and quantity pricing applied in the cart.
Email and live chat reach someone who knows the catalogue, with replies in about an hour, day or night.
Encrypted payment in Canadian dollars, plain protective packaging, and parcels released only to the named purchaser.

It arrived as described with the full amount in the vial. Graphic design looks perfect.
Yes everything was great. I appreciated the little plastic bottle holders also
Great product - I have purchased peptides from various different vendors and this seems to be the only one thats pure . Highly recommend
