Ottawa is the one Canadian city where buyers routinely compare an address on one side of a provincial border with an address on the other, and here it makes a real difference: a delivery to Gatineau is in Quebec and attracts 5% GST, while the same order to an Ontario address attracts 13%. Tax follows the delivery destination, so if you have a legitimate choice of receiving address the difference is worth knowing about.

For a federal laboratory, university or hospital the tax is recoverable through your own arrangements; we issue invoices with it stated separately, and quotations tax-exclusive, so whichever figure your finance office needs is on the document. No duty and no brokerage apply to a domestic parcel.

Transit into the National Capital Region

Ottawa sits on the main eastern corridor, so domestic transit is straightforward and predictable. The local variable is that a substantial share of deliveries go to institutional and government addresses, which means a central receiving dock rather than a laboratory door.

Central receiving is a good thing for parcel security and a poor thing for temperature control: a parcel can sit in an internal distribution queue for a day or more after tracking shows it delivered. If you can have material addressed to a named person at a specific room rather than to a general receiving address, do. Ottawa’s research buyers are unusual in Canada because so many of them are federal. The National Research Council’s Montreal Road and Sussex Drive campuses, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Central Experimental Farm, Health Canada and CFIA laboratories, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, the CHEO Research Institute, uOttawa and Carleton between them account for most of what we ship into the region.

A government or hospital site behaves differently from a commercial one. Receiving is often appointment-based and access to the building is controlled, so a courier who arrives without an expected delivery on the list may leave with the parcel still on the van. Some sites will not accept a delivery addressed to an individual at all, only to a section or a stores function. The practical answer is the same in every case: obtain the exact receiving address and any internal reference from the department before ordering, and put both on the shipment.
